Measuring tapes and ruler

The simplest measuring tool, a ruler, is used to measure the length. Depending on the needs and the place of application, they can be strip, metal, wooden, soft, or laser. In-car workshops, measuring tape and machinist’s rules are used.

Measuring tape

Measuring tapes are a flexible type of ruler in the form of sheet metal that is wound into a housing with a spring return mechanism. Can be of different lengths, usually 2, 3, 5, 8, and 10 m. The measuring tape is pulled from the housing to measure items, and a spring return winds it back into the housing. There is a locking mechanism on the housing that holds the extended measuring tape to the desired length.

Lengths with large, medium and small lines are marked on the measuring tape. There is a distance of 1 cm between every two lines. A small and a middle line are placed between the two large lines. The middle line represents 5 mm. Each small line determines the length in mm, which is the smallest measure of the measuring tape.

The machinist’s rule looks like a ruler and is made of metal (steel, aluminum). The measuring scale is located on the edge of the rule and is divided into divisions. The minimum dimension is 1 mm. They are used to measure and mark out items. Protect the machinist’s rule from damage by storing it carefully. A damaged ruler will not give an accurate measurement because it determines the beginning of the measure. If damaged, it may affect the accuracy of the measurements.
