Inspecting the steering column

Inspecting the steering column is necessary to detect malfunctions that can endanger the lives of the driver and the people around him. The steering wheel and column are responsible for transmitting the driver’s steering input to the steering mechanism and onto the wheels, dictating the direction in which the vehicle should move. Any damage or failure to the steering wheel and column can cause the vehicle to move in unwanted directions. Regular inspection of the steering column and its components can identify problems before they become dangerous.

The steering column is always inspected when there are complaints of poor handling and when the vehicle is being repaired due to a frontal collision. If damage is evident, the damaged parts must be replaced.

Inspecting the steering column

On the column, the condition of the holder, the joint connection with the gear shaft of the steering rack (U-joint), and the flexible joint are checked.

When the steering wheel moves or steering is difficult, the condition of the steering column holder checking. If the fastening screws have loosened or the bracket has loosened, tighten and fasten the steering column.

The condition of the couplings is visually inspected while someone turns the steering wheel to one side and the other. The U-joint must not have free play. When any play is observed, this joint must be replaced.

Steering columns are designed to deform in the event of an accident so that the steering column does not injure or kill the driver. The column has a sliding shaft that allows it to slide down when the rider is in contact with the steering wheel. Inspection of the collapsible part of the steering column is usually carried out if the vehicle has been in an accident and it is suspected that the column has moved. The check is done by looking at the flexible coupling under the dashboard when someone pushes the steering wheel back and forth. The movement of the column will be visible if this coupling is deformed.

To inspect the steering column, follow these steps:

Holder check

Check the steering column holders for looseness while turning the steering wheel. If the holders are loose, tighten the fastening screws. If the bracket is cracked, replace the steering column.

Checking the U-joint

Observe the condition of the U-joint while someone turns the steering wheel side to side. If there is free play, replace the U-joint.

Checking the flexible coupling

Observe the flexible coupling when someone moves the steering wheel back and forth. If the column moves, the coupling is deformed, and the steering column needs to be replaced.
