Penetrant testing cylinder head

The penetrant testing cylinder head is a way to detect cracks. Penetrant is a chemical, usually red, which effectively marks even the smallest cracks on metal castings. Three separate chemicals are used: penetrant, cleaner, and developer.

The cylinder head must be clean and degreased before applying the chemical. Penetrant is applied to the tested surface of the cylinder head. After 5 minutes, all visible penetrant is removed with a cleanser applied to a clean cloth. The test surface is then sprayed with a developer to pull the penetrant out of the crack. When the developer dries, where the cracks are, the penetrant will paint them red.

To penetrant testing cylinder head, follow these steps:

Infliction of penetrant

Sprayed or brush applied penetrant on the surface of the cylinder head. Leave the treated surface to dry for 5 minutes.

Cleaning

Apply the cleaning agent on a clean cloth and wipe off all visible penetrants.

Infliction of developer

After cleaning the penetrant, spray the developer on the test surface.

Surface inspection

When the developer dries, inspect the test surface for cracks.
